NEET UG age requirements for 2026
For NEET UG 2026, you must complete 17 years by 31 December 2026. The NTA bulletin gives the cutoff as a date of birth on or before 31 December 2009. It also states that there is no upper age limit. These rules apply to the 2026 examination cycle. [S15]
Compare your recorded date of birth with that cutoff. Your age when you apply or sit the examination does not replace the age condition for 31 December.
| NEET UG 2026 age requirement | What the bulletin says |
|---|---|
| Minimum age | Complete 17 by 31 December 2026 |
| Latest birth date meeting this age condition | 31 December 2009 |
| Upper age limit | No upper age limit |
| Minimum-age cutoff for different categories | The same cutoff applies to the listed categories |
Meeting the age requirement is one part of eligibility. You must also meet the educational qualifications and other admission conditions. [S15]
Birth dates around the NEET cutoff
The cutoff includes 31 December 2009. Here is how a difference of one day affects the result:
| Date of birth | Calendar age on 31 December 2026 | Meets the minimum-age condition |
|---|---|---|
| 30 December 2009 | 17 years 1 day | Yes |
| 31 December 2009 | Exactly 17 years | Yes |
| 1 January 2010 | 16 years 11 months 30 days | No |
The third candidate turns 17 on 1 January 2027, after the cutoff for 2026. Being one day short does not allow the age to be rounded up.
Can you be 16 on NEET examination day
You can meet the year-end age condition while still being 16 on examination day. Someone born on 31 December 2009 remains 16 until their birthday in December 2026, but turns 17 by the required cutoff. They meet the NEET UG 2026 minimum-age condition, provided the other requirements are met. [S15]
This is why the examination year and cutoff must stay with the result. Saying only that a candidate “must be 17” leaves out when they need to reach that age.
NEET upper age limits and age relaxation
The NEET UG 2026 bulletin does not set an upper age limit. Being over 25, 30 or another assumed maximum is therefore not a reason to fail this age check. [S15]
You still need to meet the minimum age and academic requirements. Do not use age relaxations from government recruitment to lower NEET's 17-year minimum. The relevant NEET provision decides the condition.
JEE Main and JEE Advanced age rules for 2026
The calculator also supports entrance-exam comparisons, but each examination has its own rules. NEET's age cutoff should not be used for JEE.
| Examination | Age-related rule for 2026 |
|---|---|
| JEE Main 2026 | No age limit for appearing; the Class XII passing or appearing year condition still applies |
| JEE Advanced 2026 | General birth-date boundary of 1 October 2001 or later |
| JEE Advanced 2026 for SC, ST and PwD candidates under the cited criteria | Birth date of 1 October 1996 or later |
For JEE Main, the bulletin allows candidates who passed Class XII or equivalent in 2024 or 2025, or are appearing in 2026. It also notes that institutions may set their own age criteria. [S16]
The JEE Advanced rows summarise Criterion A2 for Indian nationals and candidates treated as OCI/PIO (I) in its brochure. Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates need to use their separate eligibility section. Other eligibility criteria also apply. [S17]
For the general JEE Advanced age boundary, a birth date of 1 October 2001 is included, while 30 September 2001 is outside it. NEET's December minimum-age rule cannot answer this check.
Checking age rules for a different examination year
Use the official bulletin for the exact examination cycle. Adding one year to an older birth-date cutoff gives a projection, not a confirmed rule for the next examination.
Keep the examination name, year, cutoff and category with your result. If a revised notice changes the rule, check again using the revision. The examples here are labelled 2026 so that their cutoffs are not mistaken for rules for every year.
Frequently asked questions
Is 31 December 2009 included in the NEET 2026 cutoff
Yes. The bulletin includes that date. A birth date of 1 January 2010 falls after the cutoff. [S15]
Does passing Class XII early change the age rule
No. Age and educational qualifications are separate conditions. Passing early does not change your date of birth or the age cutoff.
Is the NEET minimum age different for reserved categories
The 2026 bulletin gives the same birth-date cutoff for the categories it lists. Government-job age relaxations do not lower this minimum. [S15]
