Is your child old enough for school admission
Start with the cutoff date in the school's admission notice. Work out your child's age on that date, then compare it with the requirement for the class and academic session. The school may not use your child's age today or their age when classes begin.
A child born on 15 June 2020 is 5 years, 9 months and 16 days old on 31 March 2026. The child turns 6 in June, but that is too late for a requirement to be 6 by 31 March unless a specific exception applies. A later cutoff could give a different answer for the same child.
Age requirements for preschool admission
You may see ages 3, 4, 5 and 6 linked to the preschool years and Class 1. Check the actual class names and age bands in your school's notice. That familiar progression is not one eligibility table for all schools in India.
KVS, for example, calls its preschool stages Balvatika. Its 2026–27 admission notice gives the age groups and a cutoff of 31 March 2026. The ordinary lower and upper limits below are also stated explicitly in KV CRPF Chandauli's notice for that session: [S25]

Other schools use names such as Nursery, LKG and UKG. A similar class name does not guarantee the same age rule. Ask the particular school which classes it offers and where fresh admissions are available.
KVS Class 1 age rules for 2026
KVS guidelines require a child to be 6 but below 8 for Class I as on 31 March in the admission year. They also say that a child born on 1 April should be considered. Keep that provision in mind when checking a birthday close to the cutoff. [S24]
Using the ordinary age calculation for 31 March 2026, the birth-date range is 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2020, including both dates. The separate 1 April provision also matters for a child who turns 6 on 1 April 2026.

The guidelines also allow the upper-age limit to be relaxed by two years for children with special needs. This is not a relaxation for every child, nor a general reduction in the minimum age. [S24]
Delhi school admission rules by academic session
Delhi's circular dated 24 October 2025 brings in the restructured foundational stages in phases. Its transition table allows new Class I admissions in the stated 5-plus-to-6 band for 2026–27. The 6-plus Class I structure comes later, while children already moving through the earlier structure have separate transition provisions. [S26]

The circular checks age on 31 March and also covers limited relaxation and progression from recognised schools. Use the row for your child's session and route. Applying the later Class I structure to all 2026–27 applicants would overlook these transition arrangements. [S26]
How to read minimum and maximum age limits
“At least 6” includes a child who has turned 6 by the cutoff. “Below 8” excludes a child who has already turned 8. If the notice says “up to 7”, read its full wording and any birth-date range; do not assume it means “below 7”.
Keep the cutoff date with your result. The child born on 15 June 2020 turns 6 on 15 June 2026, so a March cutoff and a June cutoff can give different answers to the minimum-age check.
If your child misses the cutoff by a few days, look for a published relaxation and check who can grant it. Being close to the birthday does not create an automatic exception.
Confirming the age rules with your school
Match the state or authority, school, class and session before using an age table. A national policy objective, a KVS rule and a state transition circular cover different situations.
Use the birth date supported by the documents the school accepts. The calculator cannot resolve conflicting records or guarantee admission. If the notice is unclear about an age boundary or progression from a previous class, ask the school which clause applies.

What if my child turns 6 after 31 March
It does not meet a plain requirement to be 6 by 31 March. Check any specific exception separately, such as the KVS provision for 1 April cited above.
Is there one age rule for every CBSE school
Do not rely on the affiliation label alone. Confirm which admission authority and published notice apply to the school and session.
Can I round 5 years and 11 months up to 6
No. Use completed age and any explicit exception in the notice. Rounding up could place your child in the wrong age band.
Can this calculator tell if my child is ready for school
It checks dates against the stated age criteria. Readiness, the right programme and the availability of a place are separate matters to discuss with the school.
