Calculate your age for a government job application

Use the “age as on” date given in the recruitment notice. Then compare your recorded date of birth with the age requirements for the post and any birth-date range the notice provides. The application deadline or examination date may be different from the age cutoff.

For example, someone born on 15 August 1995 is 30 years, 11 months and 17 days old on 1 August 2026. Checking their age on their birthday two weeks later would give an answer for the wrong date if the notice uses 1 August.

Age limits and eligible birth dates

An age range such as “18–27 years” does not explain every boundary on its own. If the notice gives “not earlier than” and “not later than” birth dates, compare your date of birth directly with those dates.

SSC CGL 2026 uses 1 August 2026 as its age reference. Before applying any relaxation, its post groups have these birth-date windows: [S23]

Age range for the postEarliest birth dateLatest birth date
18–27 years2 August 19991 August 2008
20–30 years2 August 19961 August 2006
18–30 years2 August 19961 August 2008
18–32 years2 August 19941 August 2008

Both end dates are included in each window. Use the row for the post you want. An 18–32 limit for one post does not extend an 18–27 limit for another.

Checking the earliest and latest eligible birth dates

Take the SSC CGL 2026 window for an 18–27 post, before relaxation:

Date of birthWhere it falls in the published window
1 August 1999One day before the earliest permitted date
2 August 1999On the earliest permitted date
1 August 2008On the latest permitted date
2 August 2008One day after the latest permitted date

The person born on 1 August 1999 turns exactly 27 on 1 August 2026. Even so, their birth date falls outside this published window without relaxation. A general check for “27 or younger” would miss that boundary.

Use these examples for the cited SSC notice. Another recruitment may publish different dates or wording.

Age relaxation for your category and post

Age relaxation changes the limit used for eligibility. It does not change your actual age or date of birth.

For SSC CGL 2026, the listed upper-age relaxations include 5 years for SC/ST and 3 for OBC. The specified PwBD, PwBD-OBC and PwBD-SC/ST categories have relaxations of 10, 13 and 15 years respectively. [S23]

As a simple calculation, adding an allowed three-year relaxation to a nominal upper limit of 27 gives 30. You still need to follow the notice's exact relaxed birth-date boundary and category conditions. Add concessions together only when the notice expressly permits that combination.

A reservation category does not automatically bring an age concession. Do not assume an EWS age relaxation, or carry an SSC concession over to UPSC, a railway recruitment, a bank or a state service. Check the provision for the particular application.

How military service affects the age check

Some rules first deduct qualifying military service from the applicant's age. SSC CGL 2026 specifies a three-year concession after that deduction for its ESM category. [S23]

For an arithmetic example, 35 years of actual age minus 8 years of qualifying service gives an adjusted age of 27 for the permitted comparison. Your actual age remains 35. The adjusted figure is not the age to enter in an ordinary personal-details field.

Use the precise service dates and the notice's definition of qualifying service. Rounding service to the nearest year can affect a result close to the limit.

Keep the recruitment details with your result

When saving an age check, include the recruitment year, post, cutoff, date of birth and any relaxation used. Those details explain why the result applies to that application.

Passing the age condition does not confirm acceptance of the application. Qualifications, experience, certificate validity and other requirements must also be met. If a corrigendum changes the age rule, calculate again using the amended notice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I calculate my age as of today

Only if the recruitment notice asks you to. Otherwise, use its stated “age as on” date.

Does age relaxation lower the minimum age

An upper-age relaxation changes the upper limit. It does not lower the minimum unless the notice explicitly says so.

Does an EWS certificate qualify me for age relaxation

Do not assume it does. Look for a specific age-relaxation provision in the notice and apply only the allowance it grants.

Can I use the same result for another post

Check the other post's age range, cutoff and conditions first. Even posts within the same examination can have different upper limits.
