Check driving licence age conditions in India for today or a planned application date. Compare the vehicle descriptions that apply to you and see upcoming age milestones. Meeting an age condition does not grant a licence or permission to drive.
- Calendar events are one-off, all-day civil birthday reminders, not legal eligibility dates.
- For a 29 February birth, the reminder uses 28 February in a non-leap year.
- Names and dates of birth are not included as separate fields.
- They are not licensing appointments.

What is the driving licence age in India
The age you need depends on the vehicle. Under section 4 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 18 is the ordinary minimum age for driving a motor vehicle in a public place. There is a restricted route from age 16 for a motorcycle with an engine capacity not exceeding 50 cc, and a general age-20 provision for transport vehicles, with exceptions and class-specific rules. [S28]
Before checking your age, identify the vehicle's actual class. Words such as “scooter”, “automatic” or “commercial vehicle” do not give enough information on their own.
Driving age limits by vehicle type
| Vehicle or route | Age to check | What else matters |
|---|---|---|
| Restricted motorcycle route | 16 | Engine capacity must not exceed 50 cc; learner and consent conditions apply |
| Ordinary private car and motorcycle routes | 18 | You still need the correct licence class and must meet the licensing requirements |
| Transport-vehicle route outside the LMV overlap explained below | Generally 20 | The statutory vehicle class and any special requirements must be checked |
Meeting the age condition does not give you permission to drive without a valid licence. Delhi's learner guidance describes the under-18 route as a motorcycle without gears up to 50 cc, with written consent from a parent or guardian. [S19, S22, S28]
Can you ride any gearless scooter at 16
No. The engine-capacity limit still applies. A scooter above 50 cc does not qualify for the restricted route at 16 just because it has no gears or uses an automatic transmission. [S19, S28]
For an electric scooter, check the model's approved classification and licensing requirements with the RTO. The petrol-engine rule does not mean that every electric scooter is exempt or can be ridden at 16. The model's marketing name will not settle its legal class.
Light motor vehicle licences and transport rules
Not every vehicle used commercially requires separate transport-class authorisation. In its 6 November 2024 judgment, the Supreme Court upheld the overlap that allows an LMV licence holder to drive transport vehicles within the statutory LMV weight category without separate transport-class authorisation. The judgment discusses the 7,500 kg boundary and keeps special eligibility requirements for classes such as e-carts, e-rickshaws and hazardous-goods vehicles. [S18]
It also distinguishes the additional transport requirements for vehicles above the LMV category. Before applying the general age-20 threshold, check the registered class, the relevant weight measure and how the vehicle will be used. Calling it a taxi, goods vehicle or commercial vehicle can leave out details that affect the answer.
Your age on the licence application date
Use your recorded date of birth and the date you intend to apply, or another reference date you want to check. Birthday milestones help with planning, while the licensing authority decides the applicable legal age boundary.
For a person born on 15 October 2008:
| What you are checking | Result |
|---|---|
| Age on 6 October 2026 | 17 years 11 months 21 days |
| Eighteenth birthday | 15 October 2026 |
| Time from 6 October to that birthday | 9 days |
This shows when the birthday falls. It does not guarantee a licence will be issued that day or replace a legal rule about the exact day of reaching the required age.
Use the full birth date when applying close to a threshold. Two people born in 2008 may reach the required age at different times of the year.
When you can apply for a permanent licence
Reaching the minimum age is only one step. A learner's licence and a permanent driving licence have different procedural requirements. Delhi Transport's official FAQ says a learner's licence is valid for six months. It says you can apply for a permanent licence after 30 days and before the learner's licence expires. [S20]
Once you meet the age condition, the learner issue date therefore matters too. The required test, test availability and the authority's process affect when you can obtain a licence. A birthday countdown cannot determine those dates.
Check the current instructions for your vehicle class on the Parivahan portal or with the relevant state transport authority.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a private car licence at 16
The restricted age-16 provision applies to the specified motorcycle route. It does not provide a private-car route at 16. [S28]
Does parental consent remove the vehicle restriction
Is 20 the minimum age for all commercial driving
Check the vehicle before applying that rule. Its weight, the LMV and transport-class overlap, and any special class requirements can affect which conditions apply. [S18]
Is reaching the minimum age enough to start driving
An age result does not issue a licence. You must meet the licensing conditions for the vehicle and for your stage of the process, whether learner or permanent.
