Minimum voting age in India

The minimum voting age in India is 18. For enrolment in the electoral roll, age is checked against four qualifying dates: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. The qualifying date that applies to you may come after your eighteenth birthday. [S05, S06]

For example, if you were born on 15 May 2008, you turn 18 on 15 May 2026. The first qualifying date on or after that birthday is 1 July 2026. That is the relevant date for the age check. Your name is not automatically added to the electoral roll on that day.

Finding your voter registration qualifying date

If you turn 18 during 2026, use your birthday to find the first qualifying date on or after it:

Your eighteenth birthdayFirst qualifying date on or after it
1 January 20261 January 2026
2 January to 1 April 20261 April 2026
2 April to 1 July 20261 July 2026
2 July to 1 October 20261 October 2026
2 October to 31 December 20261 January 2027

A birthday on 1 April meets the April date. A birthday on 2 April falls after it, so the next date is 1 July. This table helps you check age; it does not tell you when an application will be processed.

If you are already over 18, you do not need to wait for another birthday to check your registration. Look up your name in the electoral roll and follow the current enrolment instructions for your constituency.

Voter registration birth date cutoffs for 2026

Using the ordinary calculation of eighteen years, these are the latest birth dates that meet the age condition at each qualifying date:

Qualifying dateDate of birth must be on or before
1 January 20261 January 2008
1 April 20261 April 2008
1 July 20261 July 2008
1 October 20261 October 2008

Someone born on 15 November 2008 is still 17 on 1 October 2026. They turn 18 in November, making 1 January 2027 the next qualifying date. Checking age only on election day can therefore miss the date used for electoral enrolment.

Applying for a voter ID before turning 18

ECI allows eligible young people aged 17 or above to apply in advance with reference to the upcoming qualifying dates. This lets you begin the enrolment process early. It does not allow you to vote at 17. [S06]

Form 6 is used to register a new general elector. You must also meet the citizenship, ordinary-residence and other eligibility requirements. The authority checks the application and enrols an eligible applicant through the prescribed process. [S05]

After applying, track the application and check whether your name has been added to the roll. Reaching the required birthday or submitting a form does not confirm that registration is complete.

Check your name in the electoral roll

Being 18 is one requirement for voting. Your name must also appear in the applicable electoral roll, and you must meet the other conditions. A voter ID card on its own does not replace the roll entry. [S07]

Once you have checked your age, use the ECI voter services portal to confirm your name and constituency. If you are registering for the first time, follow the current Form 6 instructions. If you have already applied, check the application and registration status there.

Frequently asked questions

Can I vote at 17 if I have already applied

No. Applying in advance does not change the minimum age of 18. You must also be validly enrolled before you can vote. [S06]

Is 1 January the only qualifying date

No. The qualifying dates also include 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. Use all four dates when checking which one applies to you. [S06]

Which date is used to check my age

The date you submit the form is different from the qualifying date used to assess age. Use the qualifying date that applies to your application.
