How many days until your birthday
A birthday countdown tells you how many days are left until your next birthday. If this year's birthday has passed, the countdown moves to next year's date.
For a birthday on 20 October, there are 14 days to go from 6 October 2026. The birthday falls on a Tuesday. Someone born in 2000 will turn 26 that day.
The day and month tell you when the birthday falls. The birth year tells you how old the person will be. On the actual date of birth, the first birthday anniversary is still a year away.
Which birthday does the countdown use
The target depends on where the birthday falls compared with the date you are checking:
| When the birthday falls | Date to count toward |
|---|---|
| Later this year | This year's birthday |
| Today, in a year after the birth year | Today, with 0 calendar days left |
| Earlier this year | Next year's birthday |
For someone born on 20 October 2000, checking on 21 October 2026 means counting toward 20 October 2027, their 27th birthday. The day and month stay the same; the target year moves forward.
If you want a particular milestone, use that birthday instead. The same person's 30th birthday is 20 October 2030, even though other birthdays come sooner.
How to count the days until your birthday
Within the same month, you can subtract the dates. From 6 October to 20 October, the calculation is 20 − 6 = 14 days.
When the countdown crosses a month or year, count the days in each part. From 20 December 2026 to 5 January 2027, there are 11 days to 31 December and another 5 to 5 January. That makes 16 days.
A countdown uses the reference date as the starting point. Tomorrow is one day away; today is zero days away. Adding one to count both ends would give an inclusive date count instead.
To show the wait in weeks, divide the days by seven and keep the remainder. A 16-day countdown is 2 weeks and 2 days. “One month away” will not always mean 30 days because months have different lengths.
What day will your next birthday fall on
The weekday depends on the year. A birthday usually moves forward by one weekday each year, or by two if a leap day falls between the two birthdays.
For a birth date of 20 October 2000, the 2026 birthday falls on Tuesday and the 2027 birthday falls on Wednesday. Knowing the weekday can help you plan a celebration, even if you choose to hold it on another date.
If you want the weekday of your original birth date, use what day was I born. That may be different from the weekday of your next birthday.
Why day counts and countdown clocks can differ
A day countdown compares calendar dates. A countdown clock compares exact times, so it needs a target time and time zone as well. “Two days until my birthday” and “35 hours remaining” can both make sense, depending on what is being measured.
You also need to choose whether you are counting toward midnight or your birth time. If you were born at 3 pm, your birthday begins before the exact anniversary of that birth time arrives.
People in different time zones may have different local dates at the same moment. Use the location where you want to mark the birthday when comparing countdown clocks.
Counting down to a 29 February birthday
For someone born on 29 February, the next annual celebration and the next actual 29 February may be years apart. In a non-leap year, they may celebrate on 28 February or 1 March.
After a celebration in 2026, for example, the next actual leap-day birthday is 29 February 2028. The leap year birthday calculator explains the two annual conventions and counts actual leap-day anniversaries separately.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the countdown show zero on my birthday
The birthday date has arrived, so no calendar days remain. Your celebration or exact birth-time anniversary may still be later in the day. The date you were born is the starting point, rather than your first birthday anniversary.
Do I need to enter my birth year
The day and month identify an ordinary annual birthday. You need the year to find the age you will turn and to check that a 29 February birth date is valid.
Why are two birthday countdowns one day apart
They may be using different local dates, target times or ways of including the start and end dates. Check those choices before comparing the numbers.
Are weekends included in the countdown
Yes. Birthdays follow the calendar, so weekends and holidays count too.
