How Old Would They Be Calculator

To find how old someone would be, count from their date of birth to the date you have in mind. You do not need their death date for this calculation.

A person born on 1 May 1950 would have turned 76 on 1 May 2026. If they died on 10 June 2020, their age at death was 70 years, 1 month and 9 days. You might use either age in a remembrance, depending on what you want to say.

With the birth date, death date and date of remembrance, you can answer three questions:

For a birthday tribute, you may want the age the person would have reached. For a death anniversary, you usually need the time since their death. A family-history record may need their age at death instead.

Subtract the birth year from the year you are checking. If their birthday had not yet arrived by that date, subtract one. For a more detailed age, count the extra full months and remaining days. This calculator keeps monthly milestones on the original day of birth, using a month's last day when that day is missing.

For someone born on 1 May 1950, subtracting the years gives 76 in 2026. They would still have been 75 on 30 April 2026 and would have turned 76 on 1 May. The date matters even if you only plan to write the age in years.

Use the date of the tribute or occasion you are preparing for. If you are writing about a birthday next month, calculate for that birthday rather than today.

Adding the completed years at death to the completed years since death leaves out the extra months in both periods. That can make the answer one year too low.

In the example, the person was 70 when they died. By 1 May 2026, five full years had passed since their death, with the sixth death anniversary still ahead. Adding 70 and 5 gives 75, but calculating directly from the birth date gives 76.

Use the actual dates for each question. This is particularly helpful when the birthday and death anniversary fall in different months.

A first birthday anniversary is one year after birth. A first death anniversary is one year after death. In both cases, the original event is the starting point.

For a death on 10 June 2020, the sixth death anniversary is 10 June 2026. It has not arrived on 1 May 2026, even though the person's 76th birthday falls that day.

A birth year gives an approximate age, but it cannot give an exact age for every date. Someone born in 1950 would have been 75 or 76 on 1 May 2026, depending on whether their birthday had arrived.
